By 1976, surimi was being
marketed successfully as a similarly flavorful but
more economical alternative to crab meat and other
shellfish. Popularity of this tasty, healthful product
continued to expand throughout North America, South
America and Europe in the late '70s and early '80s.
By 1983, just 7 years after its introduction, surimi
consumption in North America had grown to an impressive
6 million pounds annually. Since then, its popularity
has exploded.
In 1985, the growing popularity
of surimi prompted Kemp Fisheries to begin producing
surimi-based seafood products. In January 1986,
Crab Delights® was introduced, and the company
was renamed Louis Kemp Seafood Company. The introduction
of Lobster Delights® followed in 1990 and Scallop
Delights® in 1995. |
